If you own solar panels or you care about the future or clean solar energy in California, please recognize that the utilities are working hard to destroy rooftop solar in January of 2022. Please join the free, non-profit organization “The Solar Rights Alliance” (SRA) and visit their website for details on the disastrous plan that the utilities have pressured the Public Utilities Commission to implement in early 2022. Don’t think it can’t happen! In 2016, Nevada utilities used similar tactics to harm rooftop solar in that state and they succeeded. The result was catastrophic to the industry with thousands of solar installers losing their jobs and companies going out of business, not to mention the rooftop solar owners who suddenly were deprived of energy credits they’d been promised. After a few years, the state realized its mistake and reversed their PUC’s decision. What a waste! What a setback to clean energy! Please take action to defend solar in California. All the information and resources you need can be found at www.solarrights.org. In a recent SRA blog, they wrote “On December 13th, the CPUC proposed to charge consumers a solar penalty fee of $57 per month on average – just for putting solar panels on their roof! This and the other components of the proposal are a near carbon-copy of that PG&E, So Cal Edison, and San Diego Gas & Electric lobbied for. The CPUC’s proposal would put solar out of reach for the working and middle class, just when it is taking off.” They also wrote that the proposal “rolls back protections for existing solar users. Existing solar users are currently protected from changes to net metering rules for 20 years from the date their system turned on. The CPUC is now proposing to reduce that protection to 15 years, and eliminate the protection altogether if you accept their battery rebate.”
